The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) has reached an agreement to raise the total number of teams competing in the World Championships for both men’s and women’s volleyball to 32.
As a result of the enlargement, which was given the go-ahead by the Board of Administration of the FIVB, an additional eight nations will take part in each of the events.
In the round-robin portion of the competition, the 32 teams will be split up into eight groups of four to compete against one another. Only the top two teams from each group will move on to the knockout stages of the competition. This new format will be implemented the following year.
Under the former arrangement, the top two teams from each of the six groups would advance, and the four teams that finished in third place would also proceed.
The notification of the revisions was made on the same day that the Women’s World Championship was completed in Poland and The Netherlands. From a field of twenty-four competitors, Serbia emerged triumphant to claim the title of world champion.
Additionally, Italy won the men’s world title for the fourth time in the month that just passed.
